1. Why valve casting scale is hard to grind
- Hard and brittle: dull grains just skate over high-temperature oxide.
- Large, curved areas: butterfly valve discs are curved on both faces, so belts work alongside flap discs.
- Stainless is heat-sensitive: cast grades such as CF8 and CF8M conduct heat poorly and blue under dwell; belts used on carbon steel must never touch stainless, because embedded iron rusts.
2. Zirconia vs ceramic in one table
| Zirconia | Ceramic | |
|---|---|---|
| How it re-sharpens | Needs enough pressure to fracture grains | Microcrystalline, keeps micro-fracturing at moderate pressure |
| Best for | Heavy stock removal, carbon steel and general stainless castings | Stainless and high-alloy parts that overheat; stations where pressure is limited |
| Grinding temperature | Normal when pressure is right | Lower |

3. Which MOOSEFOS belt
| Model | Grain | Standard grits | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| WY1599 | Ceramic | 36, 60, 80, 120 | Stainless and heavy metals; heat-sensitive, hard-to-grind descaling |
| PZ633+ | Zirconia | 40, 60, 80, 100 | Heavy-duty dry grinding, forging burrs; strong joint |
| DY528 | Zirconia | 40, 60, 80, 120 | Stainless and heavy metals, grits up to 120 |
| WY1266 | Zirconia | 40, 60, 80 | Investment castings |
Standard sizes are on each product page; all models can be made to order in custom widths and lengths.
4. How to prove which belt pays
- Same grinder, same operator, same batch of parts; 2–3 belts of each type.
- Log per belt: parts ground before it stopped cutting or broke, joint failures, any bluing.
- Work out belt cost per part, then compare.
| Model / grit | Belts tried | Parts per belt | Breaks / joint failures | Bluing |

5. After the scale is off
The coarse grit only removes scale; follow with 60 grit to even out the surface and go finer if appearance matters. For stainless valves with high corrosion requirements, pickling and passivation usually follow: grinding removes the visible oxide, but TWI notes the chromium-depleted layer beneath it is best removed by pickling.
